Take a Quick Inventory
You don't need exact numbers, a rough count is plenty.
- Count the boxes, bins, and bags of loose prints (an estimate is fine)
- Count albums, scrapbooks, and framed photos you'd want included
- Note any slides, negatives, film reels, VHS tapes, or cassettes
- Estimate how many photos live on your phone and computer
- List the devices and drives involved: phones, laptops, SD cards, CDs, cloud accounts
Snap a Few Photos of the Piles

- Photograph each closet, shelf, or corner where photos are stored
- Take a close-up of anything fragile, stuck together, or water damaged
- Photograph any old media you can't play or view anymore
- Have those pictures ready to text or email after we talk
Decide What Matters Most

- Name the outcome you want: organized boxes, digital backups, an album, or a video tribute
- Pick the one collection you'd rescue first if you could only choose one
- Note anyone whose photos or stories should be captured soon
- Decide who else in the family should be part of the decision

- Decide whether you want it all at once or phased over several months
